Kate and Elliott Merricck

Kate (Austin) and Elliott Merrick, Kate: (1895-1989), Elliott: (1905-1997). Kate Austin, originally from Australia, worked in Labrador as a nurse in the 1920s and 1930s. World War one influenced her decision to become a nurse, as it was an ideal occupation for travel and adventure. After being trained as a nurse, Kate left her family to work in France and later left France for Labrador in search of a more rugged experience. Elliott was the author of "Northern Nurse", a collaboration between husband and wife depicting Nurse Kate's experience in Labrador, as well as 7 other books and countless additional stories in magazines. Elliott was born into an affluent family in Montclair, New Jersey on May 11th, 1905. He worked with his father's firm, The National Lead Company for almost a year before travelling to Labrador as a volunteer with the Grenfell Mission. Following his time as a WOP (worker without pay) he stayed in Labrador as a schoolteacher in North West River where he met and courted Kate Austin. After the couple had been married and were expecting their first of three children they moved to New Jersey and later to a farm in Vermont, where the book "Northern Nurse" took shape. Kate died in 1989 at age 94 and Elliott died in 1997.

Robert Davis (1918- ) was born to Mary (Anthony) and John Davis. He left his home in Cartwright for employment with the building of the Air Force Base in Goose Bay. He married Patience Perrault and raised two children.

Doris Saunders
Person

Doris (Martin) Saunders, daughter of Donald and Harriet (Pardy) Martin, was born on June 6, 1941, in Cartwright, Labrador. She married Frank Saunders in Cartwright on June 29, 1960. Since 1975, Doris has been the editor of Them Days magazine, for which she has recieved numerous awards, including the Order of Canada in 1986. In 1994,she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of letters from Memorial University in Newfoundland. Doris was also well known for her embrodery work, which she had been doing since 1952-1953 and for which she has won many awards. Doris passed away May 28th 2006

Harvey Mesher

Harvey A. R. Mesher was born in Independent Harbour on August 28, 1916. He lived in Independent Harbour until he moved to Paradise River in1975. He later moved to Happy Valley-Goose Bay where he lived until his death in 1986.

Thomas Martin
Person

William Thomas Martin (1945-) was born to Harriet and Donald Martin in Cartwright, Labrador, where he was educated. He later moved to Happy Valley, married Ethel Decker and had 3 sons, Charles, David and Dennis. During his time in Happy Valley he worked with the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, served on the Town council and was employed by Joymac Construction. He later moved to the Labrador Straits and worked on several shrimp trawlers travelling from Labrador to Greenland. Since moving to English Point, Labrador, he has married Shirley Barney.

Flora (Blake) Baikie (1890-1988) was born in Mulligan, Labrador, to Sarah Jane and Thomas Blake. Flora Baikie’s mother died when she was 2 years old, and her grandmother, Lydia Campbell raised her, until her father married Mary Goudie. Flora married Freeman Baikie on August 4, 1910, and had 10 children.
