Biografie
George Snelgrove (1921-), accountant, civil servant, genealogist, was born in St. John's, Newfoundland on 1 September 1921, son of Mary (Bussey) and Arthur Snelgrove.
Snelgrove received his early education at Holloway School and Prince of Wales Collegiate, St. John's. He attended Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), where he earned a BA degree with Honours in History. He worked in accounting and administration for the company, A.H. Murray. He later joined the federal civil service, where he was employed until his retirement in 1981. After his retirement, he began graduate studies in Maritime History at MUN.
Snelgrove is past president of the Newfoundland Genealogical Society, a member of the Wessex Society, the Newfoundland Historical Society, and the Western Front Society.

The charts belonged to George's father, Arthur Snelgrove, sea captain. The remaining items were part of George Snelgrove's personal collection.
Bereik en inhoud
Collection consists of photographs of various vessels in St. John's, harbour and elsewhere. Photographs include the following: the management and staff of Murray Agencies [1950s]; 2 photographs of the Department of Transport vessel Sea Beacon; the deck of the tug Glenmore, Furness Withy; the Signa tied up at Murray's wharf; 11 photographs of the voyage of the Hudson Bay Company vessel Fort James; the sinking of the Signa (1959); the Gazella; the Anglo Newfoundland Development (AND) paper company shed; the SS Stephano; and 6 photographs of the two-masted schooner James Burton Cook.
The collections also includes 21 charts of Newfoundland and the North Atlantic, including a 1907 map of Howley's geological survey of Newfoundand (top half only), as well as articles on the voyage of the Fort James and clippings concerning the Norma and Gladys from the periodical Sea Classics.
