Fonds · 1907-1939

The records of the Belleoram branch of Harvey & Company Limited are fragmentary, covering the period 1907-1939. They consist of correspondence and telegraphs, accounts, diaries, daily labour books and some shipping papers; manifests, clearance certificates, schooner accounts and disbursements. A fish accounts book gives accounts of people, mainly women, making fish, quintals made and payments. Accounts for the banking schooner, Rita M. Cluett, give the names of the sharemen and catches per dory. The daily labour books provide a breakdown of the work being carried out on the premises.

The fonds is organized in four series: Correspondence, 1907-1932; Account books, 1909-1939; Diaries and daily labour books, 1923-1933; Shipping papers, 1907-1932, arranged chronologically.

Fonds · 1861-1958

The records of Harvey & Company Limited, St. John's, covers at least two distinct periods in the firm's evolution and have been acquired at different times and from different sources. Most of the original material covers the post-confederation period, and consists of correspondence (1955-1956) and some loose leaf ledgers and journals. There are transcripts of two letter books, dated 1902-1910, by W. G. Gosling, (1863-1930), a shareholder and long time manager for Harvey's. The letterbooks give valuable insight into both the business and other interests in Gosling's life. There is also a photocopy of a diary, dated 1885. Other records relate to the Bay Bulls Development Syndicate, a subsidiary of Harvey's which was established in 1925.

The Medical School and University Hospital project was first considered in the period 1961-1963, and its need and feasibility was supported by Lord Brain in his study and subsequent report on the Health Services in the Province in 1965-1966. It also demonstrated and reaffirmed the MacFarlane report of 1966. Following a conference held in St. John’s in the fall of 1966 to discuss the effects of the establishment of a health sciences centre, a Brief to the Government of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador was prepared and submitted by the University in November 1966. A commitment in principle was made by Premier Smallwood on behalf of the Provincial Government on 18 April, 1967, recognizing the immense benefits, which would accrue to the Province’s health resources as a result of the institution of a medical school and university hospital.

The publication of the Royal Commission on Health Services in Canada and the subsequent establishment of the Health Resources Fund by the Federal Government confirmed the local and national need to train more medical and para-medical practitioners and assisted in no small measure in establishing the viability of the project terms and initial cost. The University, in recognising the close disciplinary relationships between the Health and Life Sciences and the academic and economic benefits, which would be achieved, decided in 1967 to integrate the Life and Health Sciences into one physical and administrative complex. The facilities in this complex would include schools of the health-related professions in a similar close association to the continuing benefit of Newfoundland and Labrador.

In the summer of 1968, following the appointment of the Dean of Medicine, work began on functional planning and development of a master plan for the Health and Life Sciences Centre within the framework of Sir Frederick Gibberd’s master plan for the University as a whole. This planning and development document found here in this collection, is divided into two parts and defines the functional objectives of the proposed Centre, outlines its functional requirements and organization in terms of personnel and space and recommends a plan or framework for its physical development.

The Functional and Development Plan for the Health and Life Sciences Centre at Memorial University represented a further, positive step towards the realization of Newfoundland’s Medical School and University Hospital. Also, it defined the future expansion of the important programmes of the Life Sciences and the establishment of training facilities for the health-related professions.

The functional and development plan was developed to meet the specific needs of Newfoundland and Labrador’s medical system not only in relation to the health services of the Province but also to ensure that fiscal demands arising from the construction of the Centre could be met by the Government in a flexible way. The development concept recommended in this report was not a rigid plan but a system of building the facilities for this very exciting and forward-looking Centre.

The wide range of alternative phasing possibilities meant that the plan would need to be monitored, ensuring that the University’s needs were met, phase by phase, and the Centre’s full potential was realized without inhibiting the basic aim of integration of the disciplines. It was also intended the plan be extremely functional to produce an efficient and economic Centre, both in construction and in operation, and that the design concept proposed would enable the Provincial and Federal Government to embark upon the construction of this Centre with confidence.

Fonds consists of a photocopied letter book of James Darrell Gill for 1840-61. It contains letters from New York primarily to family members in St. John's, Newfoundland. The letters are arranged chronologically.

These papers cover four generations of the Job business, and reflect its diverse interests and holdings. The business records consist mainly of balance sheets and directors' reports, and reveal the many subsidiary concerns in which the family and its parent companies had invested. The papers also contain many legal documents, including examples of nineteenth century indentures, mining leases, property conveyances, share certificates, agreements and leases. Series 11-13 deal largely with the Liverpool side of the family, Samuel Job and Robert Hugh Job in particular, and in their capacity as executors of wills. Three photographs were found with the collection, one of Indian Harbour, c.1892, and two of 'Corner Bank House, Bell Tower and Fish Store, Winter House where S.D.G. was born June 8, 1890', one of which was taken in 1928 and the other at an earlier date.

Collection consists of 2 photograph albums created by the Job family, reflecting the Job business ventures, Job family activities, as well as historical events. The geographic area represented by the photographs is almost exclusively Newfoundland and Labrador, with the exception of photographs from the Search for the Franklin expedition in Hudson Bay (1903-04).

Albums include photographs of the Job premises in St. John's, Quidi Vidi, Placentia, L'Anse au Loop, Blanc Sablon, Little Heart's Ease, Bell Island, and Whitbourne. Images include buildings (interior and exterior), wharves,shipping, and the fishery, including marine fishery, sealing and whaling.

Historical events represented in the albums include the royal visit of the Duke of York (1901), the sealers' strike (1902), the unveiling of the war memorial in St. John's (1924) by Field Marshall Haig, and scenes from the Viking Disaster (1931). The photographs also illustrate the economic activity and the cultural landscape in that era.

Fonds consists of audio cassette recordings of 243 Newfoundland singers and storytellers collected during regular field trips undertaken in rural Newfoundland and Labrador from 1978-1990 (ca. 3250 songs); 1 audiocassette recording of Mack Masters' performance at the Mariposa Folk Festival in 1976; 2 audiocassette recordings of music and a mummer's play performed at the St. John's Folk Club during Christmas 1977; 1 audio reel copy of Oh, Newfoundland is a Wide Plantation: the Story of Irish Settlements in Newfoundland, an episode in a series of Newfoundland School Broadcasts produced by Patrick Treacher, written and hosted by Aidan O'Hara; 24 col. photonegatives, 35 mm; 7 photocopied pocket songsters, six of Johnny Burke and one from Cape Breton; manuscript of a lecture on treason songs; 2 audio cassettes and 2 cm of correspondence related to a request for folksongs published in the St. John's Evening Telegram in 1978.

Fonds also contains materials Goldstein created and/or used in his teaching, research and public lectures. They include 83 audiocassette copies of Oral Traditions of Britain and Ireland, a series of commercial recordings issued by the Centre for Oral Traditions in England in 1975; 6 audiocassette copies of Grass Roots: An Oral History of the American People, a series of commercial recordings issued by the Visual Education Corporation of Princeton, New Jersey in 1976; 1 audiocassette recording of a lecture on her Newfoundland song-collecting experiences given by Elizabeth Bristol Greenleaf at the University of Rhode Island in 1969; 1 poster.

Fonds consist of textual and graphic records which depict the life and activities of the family. The textual records include family correspondence (1935, 1948); minute books related to the family business (1928-1951); legal documents (1902); and 1 scrapbook of newspaper clippings.

The graphic materials include 4 tintypes and 36 photographs (predominantly b&w; 15 x 20cm). There are 2 photograph albums; one contains photographs (b&w); the second includes photographs, postcards and newspaper clippings.

The fonds also includes 8 watercolours by Lottie P. Harris, which are signed LPH.

Marjorie Stoker fonds

Fonds consists of folklore and oral history materials deposited by Marjorie Stoker and is arranged into two series. Series 1 (67-024) consists of 3 audio reels documenting a kitchen party at Calvert on 5 May 1967; Series 2 (74-230 and 89-067) consist of 50 audio reels containing interviews conducted by Stoker with residents of Conne River, Conne Village, Harry's Brook, St. Alban's, St. John's, mainly pertaining to Mi'kmaq culture and folklore. Included in this fonds are 144 photonegatives (b&w) of the pages of a prayer book in the Mi'kmaq language, borrowed by Stoker and photographed by her son Richard. There is an extensive Marjorie Stoker fonds in the CNS archives at Memorial University.
