Thomas Davis collection

Collection consists of microfilm of account books for Davis's three offshore schooners and the flakeyard. The books also record the towns in which his customers and hands lived. There are notations for every voyage and the quantity of cod caught by each fishermen.

Collection consists of original material and reproductions collected by Dr. Keith Matthews, including business records and ledgers, 1806-1822; diaries, 1809-1852; fish collection books, 1791-1852; and some correspondence and letter books. There is also a series of Matthews' notes taken from Slade documents for the period 1783-1858. Photocopies predominate.

This fonds consists of original and photocopied documents for Baine, Johnston & Co.'s operations at Battle Harbour, Labrador, and St. John's, 1806-1958. The records are arranged in two series: Records relating to Battle Harbour, Labrador; and records relating to St. John's.

The records for the St. John's business consist of ledgers, desk diaries, letterbooks, office accounts, shipping records, correspondence and published materials.

The material for Battle Harbour consists of legal documents relating to property, insurances, wills and estate papers. Other records include: office accounts, shipping records and correspondence; a list of planters at Battle Harbour in 1871 and a list of planters in Labrador, 1871; and a family tree of the Grieve family.

Fonds consists of a microfilmed letterbook containing outgoing correspondence dated from 19 March 1807 to 28 April 1810. The letters were sent by George W. Ledgard and his staff in Poole to his partners John Gosse and Thomas Chancey, in Carbonear, Newfoundland, and to other merchant firms, agents, bankers, and captains.

Job Brothers & Co. Limited fonds

These papers cover four generations of the Job business, and reflect its diverse interests and holdings. The business records consist mainly of balance sheets and directors' reports, and reveal the many subsidiary concerns in which the family and its parent companies had invested. The papers also contain many legal documents, including examples of nineteenth century indentures, mining leases, property conveyances, share certificates, agreements and leases. Series 11-13 deal largely with the Liverpool side of the family, Samuel Job and Robert Hugh Job in particular, and in their capacity as executors of wills. Three photographs were found with the collection, one of Indian Harbour, c.1892, and two of 'Corner Bank House, Bell Tower and Fish Store, Winter House where S.D.G. was born June 8, 1890', one of which was taken in 1928 and the other at an earlier date.

The papers are arranged in fourteen series: Property in St. John's and Newfoundland, 1818-1916; Ledger, 1856-1882 (this is a separate accession which was added to the Job Family fonds); Stores, 1892-1952; Mines and mineral resources interests, 1889-1930; Timber interests, 1906-1912; Shipping and fisheries, miscellaneous, 1854-1942; Steamship and fisheries companies, 1913-1964; Business interests, miscellaneous, 1920-1952; Manufacturing and processing, 1914-1941; Job companies, 1907-1963; Miscellaneous family papers, 1847-1946; Cooke estate papers, 1839-1852; Howell papers, 1874-1887; Thomas R. Fonds consists of consular dispatches acquired by the Maritime History Group to be used in the Atlantic Canada Shipping Project, a major research initiative, examining various aspects of the Atlantic Canadian maritime economy. Consular dispatches included details on American shipping and investment, as well as reports on distressed sailors and fishermen.

Fonds consists of dispatches from the United States consuls at St. John's, 1852-1906. The fonds also includes consular reports from selected Canadian ports: Prince Edward Island: Charlottetown (1857-1906); Nova Scotia: Halifax (1833-1906); Pictou (1837-1907), Windsor (1872-1906); Yarmouth (1886-1906); New Brunswick: Moncton (1855-1905); Saint John (1835-1906), St. Stephen (1882-1906); Quebec (1861-1906), Gaspe (1856-1906).

Fonds also includes consular dispatches from St. Pierre, 1850-1906.
