Collection consists of 62 photographs of the Grand Falls and Botwood area, Newfoundland, ca. 1907-28. Images include the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company (AND) facilities, logging operations, the pulp and paper making process and community events in the area, as well as shipping activities at Botwood.

Collection is arranged in six series: 1. Paper mill buildings; 2. Paper mill machinery; 3. Logging operations; 4. Grand Falls dam; 5. Shipping operations, Botwood; 6. Company and community photographs.

Fonds consists of an autograph letter signed, Port of St. John's, Newfoundland, Oct. 30 1756, by Michael Gill, Commissary, certifying that George Nixon, master of the sloop Diligence, who landed a cargo of lumber from Piscatataqua, could not proceed from the harbour with his vessel as it was condemned. The cargo included a large lumber shipment of oak planks and maple boards, quite likely for shipbuilding for action in the French and Indian war.

Collection consists of microfilmed copies of three volumes of account books containing the Knight dealings with the hundreds of fishermen they hired, the export merchants to whom they sold their cod, and the dozens of maritime artisans and labourers who maintained their fleet of schooners. The account books cover the years 1767-81 and 1788-1833.

HMS Calypso fonds

Fonds consists of records relating to the construction of the ship and records created while she was commissioned with the Royal Newfoundland Reserve. The fonds includes three journals relating to the construction of the vessel, HMS Calypso, including details of the vessel's construction kept by J.H. Lovell, carpenter at Chatham Dockyard (1881); a record of weights for the vessel (1883-84); and detailed sketches of the machinery aboard the vessel (1883). Each journal contains detailed hand drawn and painted illustrations. Other files include two pieces of correspondence, one of which is a letter from David Murray to the editor of Shipbuilding and Shipping Record regarding the construction and history of the vessel, 2 Aug. 1952.

The fonds also includes four drill registers created while the vessel was used to train members of the Reserve. These lists individuals and the period of their drill, the training vessel and remarks; a register of trainees; deck logbooks (1914-20); regulations concerning summary punishments and character, conduct, badges etc.(1911-13); and day books recording liquor accounts. A salt delivery book recording deliveries after the vessel was sold to Murray's is also included.

Fonds is arranged in two series: 1. Construction journals, 1881-1884, 1952; 2. Royal Naval Reserve drill registers, 1904-1922.

The business papers consist of ledgers, account books and correspondence relating to the operation of the firm from 1892 to its closure in 1953. The personal material includes daily diaries kept by William Button which contain entries on weather, community events, births and deaths, and activities in St. John's and New Melbourne.
