The material consists of programmes, flyers, newspaper clippings, lists and photographs relating to the activities of Donald Wetmore with the YMCA in St. John's from 1942 to 1945. There is also a speech and rough notes dating from about 1950, when he spoke in honour of Don Jamieson, reflecting on their work together in the war years, as well as a photograph from 1959 showing him with Jamieson in the CJON television studio. The material is arranged in two series according to format. Correspondence relating to the collection and extracts from Donald Wetmore fonds, held at the Provincial Archives of Nova Scotia, are filed as an appendix to the fonds.

Fonds consists of the working papers of Professor Seary for his 1976 publication Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland. It includes an index of family names and information about different spellings of surnames, geographic distribution of surnames and particular information about persons with specific surnames culled from selected historical documents.

The fonds also includes correspondence, clippings about surnames, folklore survey cards pertaining to Newfoundland surnames, newspaper clippings about Seary's research and other subjects, correspondence between Seary and various individuals about family names and other academic subjects.

Fonds consists of materials collected during trips to Newfoundland In 1920, 1921 and 1929. It includes music composition books containing field notes, musical transcriptions and textual transcriptions; correspondence to and from her family; drafts of Newfoundland Days, an unpublished article written for Scribner's magazine and book reviews pertaining to Ballads and Sea Songs of Newfoundland.

The fonds consists of records relating to the activities of the United Church Community Centre (later known as Emmanuel House). It also includes administrative records (1938-2001) of the Community Centre, Community Centre Service League, Parents Study Club, Young Women's Club, Women's Cooperative Committee, Emmanuel House and Burry Heights Camp Committee. The fonds also consists of material (1929-1965) related to Dr. Stella Burry and miscellaneous material, which includes several photographs ([19-]-1992.

English 200 collection

The collection consists of short term papers, brief responses to on-going folklore survey project on folklore survey cards and assorted brief items on slips of paper. The collection represents material gathered from English 200 students as a consequence of the teaching efforts of Herbert Halpert and his colleague Elizabeth Orsten. Subjects covered include weather, tall tales, legends, traditional medicine, Newfoundland dialectical expressions, proverbial sayings, beliefs, songs, customs, riddles and games. Orsten contributed examples of proverbial sayings on dumbness. Students obtained the information from informants or from their own experiences. Some biographical information on individual informants is available.

The folklore survey cards contain information from the student manuscripts and therefore are duplicated by some of the manuscript material. Fifty of the cards were contributed by students from other English 200 classes and by Dr. Halpert.

The Maritime History Archive commenced the collection of English parish records during the period 1973-1980. The parish records document the genealogical origins of Newfoundland families whose ancestors had emigrated from England before the twentieth century.

Collection consists of microfilmed copies of records of many parishes in the south West of England, particularly in the counties of Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire. The collection focuses on those areas which supplied crews for the Newfoundland fishery and the places of origin of Newfoundland settlers. Devon parishes predominate. The collection is indexed by parish.

Fonds consists of photographs of wrecked ships, taken by marine historian Eric Lawson.

Subjects include the following: The main beam of the wrecked bark Vicar of Bray, built at Whitehaven (1841) with tonnage (285) carved as required by law, resting at Goose Green, Falkland Islands; the wreck of the Garland; the wreck of the Protector, with a condition report (1994); the wreck of the Craigie Lee, (ON 50251), wrecked 26 Dec.1879; a vessel struck a reef off Bull Point, East Falkland on a voyage to the UK with a load of guano; and the vessel Beechbank.
