Keith Matthews fonds

Fonds consists of records collected by Matthews for his dissertation and during his tenure as chair of the Maritime History Group, as well as his prior research. The fonds includes material for his research into the study of the Newfoundland/West of England fisheries, the subject of his doctoral thesis, as well as extensive data on the individuals and businesses involved in the early settlement and trade of Newfoundland, up to 1850.

The early modern documents are a collection of copies of over 1200 documents held at repositories in Britain relating to political development and trade in Newfoundland in the 17th and 18th centuries. The 19th and 20th century Newfoundland documents are copies of individual documents and collections of documents relating to the Newfoundland fishery and its government and politics, drawn mostly from records of the Colonial Office, Newfoundland governors papers and papers of Newfoundland prime ministers. The fonds also includes Matthew's research notes and personal papers.

Fonds consists of a photocopy of a ledger (1853-1858) which contains accounts of individuals who dealt with Thomas Oates & Son. The ledger also includes a list of the crew of the brigantine Belle for the year 1853, under Thomas Oates Sr., master; sealing agreements (1856, 1858); and some copies of legal documents and correspondence (1852).

Fonds consists of photocopied papers selected from the original records held at the New Brunswick Museum, Saint John. The holdings copied for MHA represent approximately ten percent of the Hilyard fonds held by the New Brunswick Museum.

The fonds consists of thirty-three items containing accounts, leases, bills of sale, contracts to build vessels, correspondence, ships' papers and a co-partnership agreement.

The fonds includes accounts (1855-63); leases for shipyard (1857-64); bills of sale for vessels (1856-64), Moss Rose; contracts to build vessels (1855-65); correspondence (1862-80); insurance policy for the Lottie Stewart (1876); ships' papers (1864-81), including the Meeranza at Liverpool, a charter party for the Teresa; and a co-partnership agreement (1869).

Fonds consists of the business records of the J.W. Hodge branch at Change Islands and includes ledgers, journals, and other business records spanning almost 90 years of operation from the early 1870s to the end of the 1950s. It represents the records of four successive businesses that operated from the same premises during the period: William Waterman & Co.

J.W. Hodge; Lewis G. Hyde; and the Newfoundland and Labrador Export Company. Upon change in ownership, each new business assumed the records of its predecessor; thus, there is little apparent break in the records themselves. The original order has not been maintained.

Fonds is arranged in four series: Correspondence, 1888-1937; Financial records, 1872-1957; Miscellaneous, 1920-1928; Shipping and fisheries papers, 1884-1941.

The records of the Belleoram branch of Harvey & Company Limited are fragmentary, covering the period 1907-1939. They consist of correspondence and telegraphs, accounts, diaries, daily labour books and some shipping papers; manifests, clearance certificates, schooner accounts and disbursements. A fish accounts book gives accounts of people, mainly women, making fish, quintals made and payments. Accounts for the banking schooner, Rita M. Cluett, give the names of the sharemen and catches per dory. The daily labour books provide a breakdown of the work being carried out on the premises.

The fonds is organized in four series: Correspondence, 1907-1932; Account books, 1909-1939; Diaries and daily labour books, 1923-1933; Shipping papers, 1907-1932, arranged chronologically.

Lester-Garland family fonds

Fonds consists of the microfilmed records of the merchant families of Lester and Garland, including the daily diaries of Benjamin and Isaac Lester. These contain information on the daily activities of their business in Poole and Newfoundland, including information on ships, the fishery, weather, other merchants, and the political climate, giving an unparalleled account of the operation of a Newfoundland business establishment of the time.

The records also include an account of the French occupation of Trinity (July 1762) by Benjamin Lester, as well as the specifications for the construction of naval vessels and the proceedings of the Newfoundland House of Assembly (1834).
