Fonds consists of correspondence and shipping papers for the company operations, 1879 -1933. Material of particular interest is the correspondence and accounts of C. T. Bennett of Bristol, which illustrates the complexities of the marketing structure and the economic factors which affected the salt fish industry as well as providing insight into the day-to-day operations of the business. The fonds also includes vessel expenditures and charter parties. The architect's specifications for the building of the Stonehouse on Water Street, Carbonear, are contained in the correspondence for 1907.

The fonds is arranged in four series: Correspondence, 1880-1933; Financial records, 1879-1920; Shipping records, 1881-1923; Miscellaneous bound volumes, 1892-1920.

The fonds consists of the business ledgers of George Forward for the period 1842-1858. These ledgers record customer accounts with George Forward at Carbonear. Partial indexes are included with some ledgers.

Forward family fonds

The fonds contains deeds, conveyances and other legal documents, 1750-1866, Captains' logbooks, 1842-72 (Samuel, 1842, William the Fourth, 1852, Britain, 1853, Harriet Ridley, 1863-65, Six Brothers, 1872), and a Furness Line sailing schedule, 1928.

The legal documents provide evidence of the acquisition, transfer and subsequent loss of the family's property in Carbonear from 1834 to the 1860s. They also provide evidence of the business activities and associations of the firm of George Forward. The Captains' logbooks detail the voyages of five of the Forward's fleet of foreign-going vessels.

The records are arranged in three series: 1. Legal documents; 2. Logbooks; 3. Other material.

The ledger also includes a list of the crew of the brigantine Belle for the year 1853, under Thomas Oates Sr., master; sealing agreements (1856, 1858); and some copies of legal documents and correspondence (1852).

Fonds consists of a microfilmed letterbook containing outgoing correspondence dated from 19 March 1807 to 28 April 1810. The letters were sent by George W. Ledgard and his staff in Poole to his partners John Gosse and Thomas Chancey, in Carbonear, Newfoundland, and to other merchant firms, agents, bankers, and captains.
