Series consists of photocopies of over 1200 individual documents relating to early modern Newfoundland, collected by Matthews in the course of his research into the West Country cod fisheries at Newfoundland. The documents are an almost complete collection of extant material held in British repositories that relates to the fisheries, settlement and political development of Newfoundland from European discovery and settlement to 1800. The collection was described and annotated by historian Peter Pope, in 1989. He also added relevant documents to the collection.

Series consists of data on individuals, families and businesses that were involved in the settlement, fisheries and trade of Newfoundland from earliest settlement to 1850. The files were compiled from a wide variety of English, Irish and Newfoundland records, include parish registers, newspapers, shipping records, customs records, political papers, census records, merchant records, diaries, records of the British Colonial Office, Admiralty and Board of Trade, muster rolls and crew lists etc. Most of the data concerns people from the West of England, but it also includes individuals involved with the Newfoundland trade who resided in London, Ireland, Bristol and the Channel Islands. The collection includes data on 7,300 surnames, arranged by surname and subdivided by given name. Records are arranged by surname.

Series consists of copies and transcripts of official documents from a range of sources relating to Newfoundland fisheries and Newfoundland politics and government during the 19th and 20th centuries. Mostly copies of Government records, British Colonial Office and Newfoundland Governor's papers. The guide to the collection provides description of each item. Records are arranged alphabetically by author.

This series consists mainly of research material collected for Matthews' thesis on the Newfoundland/West of England fishery, and is made up notes, extracts and transcripts from a wide variety of sources relating to Newfoundland, its trade and settlement in the 16th - 19th centuries. Records are arranged in sub-series relating to subject or source of information.

Records include leases, mortgages, insurances, etc. Fonds also includes material related to Robert Newman & Company accumulated by Dr. Keith Matthews. Material collected includes notes from journals, 1786-1812; photocopies and notes from ledgers, 1771-1812; notes and transcripts from letterbooks, 1792-1896; and notes from account books; Collection also includes reproduced material related to Robert Newman & Company accumulated by Dr. Keith Matthews. This fonds contains some of the corporate records of Hawes and Company (London) Ltd. The records include minutes of meetings, trade reports and subject files. Fonds consists of the administrative and operational records of the association from 1965 to 1988/89, and some general files relating to issues of interest to the last president, Wayne Davis, up to 1995. The administrative records include the articles of association and incorporation, minutes of meetings, assessment of membership, and membership lists. The correspondence and general files contain the records of the general affairs and interests of the association, reports, and draft briefs. There are some financial records in the form of invoices and cheques. The financial statements for the association were included in the records of the annual general meetings. Some of the material includes explanatory notations made by Wayne Davis when he was reviewing the files prior to donating them to the Maritime History Archive.

The fonds is arranged in five series: Administrative records, 1938 (photocopy), 1973-1988; Financial records, 1980-1986; Correspondence and general files, 1965-1987; Briefs and publications, 1963-1984; Other material, 1976, 1990-1995. The fonds also contains copies of minutes of related associations: the Newfoundland and Labrador Marine Advisory Committee and the Newfoundland Sealers' Association.

The Maritime History Archive collection of student papers contains 5429 essays relevant to the history and culture of Newfoundland and Labrador, collected by professors in the departments of Anthropology, Geography, and History. Most of the papers contain original research on Newfoundland communities and regions, but other categories of research include biographies and family histories, settlement patterns, economic development, education, health, law and justice, merchants, the military, politics and government, religion, shipping, fisheries and the fishing industry, and Labrador society and culture. Research papers may include photographs, oral histories, and diagrams.

Wilson Vardy fonds

Fonds consists of diaries that give a daily account of the weather, entries and clearances of vessels at Port aux Basques, ice conditions, and sparse comments relating to the fishery and other subjects. The letter books consist of correspondence between Wilson Vardy and the Department of Lighthouses and relates to work carried out on the lights and buoys. The logbooks are an account of the oil, wicks, and glasses used and a daily record of the weather.

Fonds is arranged in three series: Diaries, 1900-1920; Letter books, 1918-1921; and Logbooks, 1904-1921.

Fonds consists of microfilmed ships' accounts, insurance policies and papers for the following vessels: Sally (1796-1801); Dove (1797-99); Snow Mary (1803-04); Mary (1803-04); Susanna (1805); Cattle (1810); Paraquay (1849); General Higgins (1851-52); Hibernia (1789-91); Belmont (1858); Lampedo (1856-58); and Rosannah (1785).

The fonds also includes Leavitt family letters (mostly to Daniel, George and Joseph) for 1802-66; indentures and bonds (1798-1874); bills, receipts and promissory notes (1700-1856); Daniel Leavitt account book (1798); account book (1796-97); and Saint John City Poor House account book (1810-13).
