Part of Bishop John Thomas Mullock fonds

Series consists of records related to Mullock's life as a priest and Bishop, including his ecclesiastical appointments; pastoral and circular letters; documentation related to the establishment of St. Patrick's Church (1864) and the Roman Catholic Board of Education (1847, 1850-1) and correspondence with colleagues in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ireland and Rome. Series also includes correspondence relating to secular topics, including the establishment of telegraph cable facilities in Newfoundland, French Treaties related to the fisheries; the British Garrison in St. John's and jurisdictional issues related to Anticosti and Blanc Sablon.

The files are arranged thematically, except in the case of correspondence, which is organized chronologically.

Series consists primarily of Ordos, (1838-1863, with some gaps) which contain extensive journal-like notations by Mullock. These journals were maintained with Mullock's papers, but appear to have been used extensively for research by Archbishop Michael F. Howley. The financial records include Cathedral accounts ( 1859-1863), Church rents (1859-1863); subscriptions by fishermen (1859, 1861, 1864) and contributions by sealers (1858,1861, 1863).

Fonds consists of correspondence relating to parish building projects, property, and appointments (1954-1984); register listing orphans residing at Villa Nova Orphanage (1889-1890) and parish baptisms (1889-1906) and containing inserts of return of deaths for Kelligrews (1891) and return of births for Bell Island (1895); greeting cards addressed to Archbishops Roche and Skinner (1940, 1951); construction contract (1954); canonical decrees transferring the seat of the parish residence and dismembering the parish (1982); St. Thomas of Villanova church programs (1983-1984); and newspaper clippings relating to parish history (1978-1989). Fonds consists of records which relate to ecclesiastical property and buildings in Sacred Heart Parish, as well as to various Roman Catholic organizations. The ecclesiastical property records include correspondence (1917-1986); financial statements (1915-1928); a parish boundary decree (1985) and an outline of the parish boundary on a photocopied commercial map (1985); four architectural drawings of a proposed presbytery (1960); six technical drawings - one of a proposed land exchange between the Roman Catholic Church and a parishioner (1966) and five of land in Marystown belonging to the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation (1967); two sketches of the intended layout of a parish hall (1965); four Latin documents; church legal documents and forms (1915, 1919, 1948); five black and white photographs and two colour photographs.

The records which relate to church organizations include the Altar Society minute book (1926-1937) and file (1973-1976); the Holy Name Society minute books (1958-1970) and Sunday publications book (1926-1928). As well, the fonds contains material, primarily photocopies and clippings from the Roman Catholic newspaper The Monitor reflecting the history and activities of Sacred Heart Parish.

The fonds consists of records relating to Rev. Battock's life, including a baptismal certificate, academic records from Halifax Seminary (1914-1918) and invitations to 50th and 60th anniversary celebrations. The fonds also includes correspondence concerning the construction of schools in St. Lawrence (1921) and St. Vincent (1924), the designation of the parish of St. Vincent (1924), as well as newspaper clippings and printed material related to his life.
