Sunday School and Sabbath School Records

Series consist of records relating to the Sunday School Group that functions in the pastoral charge. This includes Attendance List and Collections. Also includes record of income and expenditures of the group.

Series includes: Hickman's Harbour United Church Sunday School Book, 1956-1967; Sunday School Minute Book, 1925-1936.


This series contains all the unbound material having to do with accounts. It includes accounts of advances of cash to sealing crews, 1874-1884; advances to crews per Walter Grieve of St. John's, 1876-1879; James Gent in account with Grieve & Bremner, Trinity 1872- 1899; miscellaneous accounts, 1873-1894 and loose journal accounts, 1865. Also a photocopy of a Barter Book for 1874-1875.

Shipping records

The shipping records include statements of seals taken by individual vessel, 1875; an account of the sealing fleet, 1879-1881; vessels accounts for the vessels Isabella, Dart and Gem, 1863-1878; crew subscriptions to Church properties, 1879; papers relating to insurance claims for the brig Gem, 1877-1889; papers relating to the Dart, missing at sea, 1879; charter parties, 1855-1879 and sealing crew agreements for the Dart, 1871-1877, the Lion, 1875, 1879 and the Bear, 1875.

Women's Groups Records

Series consists of records relating to the activities of the Ladies Association and the United Church Women's Group. Their activities included fund-raising and social activities of the church. Also included is attendance record of the group at their monthly meetings.

Brooking & Co. fonds

Fonds consists of a list of prices charged by the company for specific items, showing cash or "on account" charges, 1859-72. Separate lists exist for summer, fall, and winter prices. Fonds also documents price-fixing between Brooking & Co. and Grieve & Bremner in the 1860s.

Basil Fearn fonds

Fonds consists of 235 black and white photographs and negatives, mainly of vessels constructed at the Clarenville Shipyard during the period that Basil Fearn was manager of the yard, commencing in 1947. The majority of the photographs are identified. At least 50 percent of the images show vessels under construction at the yard. Some of the images were printed from negatives in 1997.

Vessels include the Matthew, the Terra Nova, the Newfoundland, the Marilyn Marie, the Richard, the Northern Wave, the George Kentner, the Philip E. Lake, the Penny Luck, the Shirley Blanche, the Algerine, the Hermitage, the Random Sound, the East Wind and the Right Wind, built for Job Brothers.

Subjects include the Alberto Wareham Limited premises and vessels in Spencer's Cove, Placentia Bay; vessels owned by Alberto Wareham Limited in Harbour Buffett, Placentia Bay; the vessels Alberto Wareham and Herbert L. Rawding; a house being towed across Placentia Bay; and Elsie Wareham, Alberto's Wareham's sister.

Some photographers, including John Butt and Bill Davies, are identified. Other photographers are unknown.
