Collection consists of original records relating to property transactions of Robert Newman & Company, 1894-1951. Records include leases, mortgages, insurances, etc. Fonds also includes material related to Robert Newman & Company accumulated by Dr. Keith Matthews. Material collected includes notes from journals, 1786-1812; photocopies and notes from ledgers, 1771-1812; notes and transcripts from letterbooks, 1792-1896; and notes from account books; Collection also includes reproduced material related to Robert Newman & Company accumulated by Dr. Keith Matthews. Also included is a history of Newman's that was written in 1951.

These papers cover four generations of the Job business, and reflect its diverse interests and holdings. The business records consist mainly of balance sheets and directors' reports, and reveal the many subsidiary concerns in which the family and its parent companies had invested. The papers also contain many legal documents, including examples of nineteenth century indentures, mining leases, property conveyances, share certificates, agreements and leases. Series 11-13 deal largely with the Liverpool side of the family, Samuel Job and Robert Hugh Job in particular, and in their capacity as executors of wills. Three photographs were found with the collection, one of Indian Harbour, c.1892, and two of 'Corner Bank House, Bell Tower and Fish Store, Winter House where S.D.G. was born June 8, 1890', one of which was taken in 1928 and the other at an earlier date.

Fonds consists of a list of prices charged by the company for specific items, showing cash or "on account" charges, 1859-72. Separate lists exist for summer, fall, and winter prices. Fonds also documents price-fixing between Brooking & Co. and Grieve & Bremner in the 1860s.

Fonds consists of 235 black and white photographs and negatives, mainly of vessels constructed at the Clarenville Shipyard during the period that Basil Fearn was manager of the yard, commencing in 1947. The majority of the photographs are identified. At least 50 percent of the images show vessels under construction at the yard. Some of the images were printed from negatives in 1997.

Vessels include the Matthew, the Terra Nova, the Newfoundland, the Marilyn Marie, the Richard, the Northern Wave, the George Kentner, the Philip E. Lake, the Penny Luck, the Shirley Blanche, the Algerine, the Hermitage, the Random Sound, the East Wind and the Right Wind, built for Job Brothers.

The fonds consists of four ledgers for 1840, 1894, 1900 and 1909. They contain accounts of the fish business originally established by Henry Goodridge (b.1762) at Renews. The 1840 ledger gives accounts of the fishery, smithery, cooperage, shipwright and schooner operation, as well as personal accounts. The ledgers for 1894, 1900 and 1909 are probably from the St. John's office, but they also include business accounts relating to the Southern Shore.

The fonds consists of financial records, ledgers, journals, order books and shop books etc., correspondence, orders and shipping information, including bills of lading, customs entry forms and marine insurances. There is a large collection of catalogues of products which were sold at the store: china and glassware of all qualities, silverware, lamps and hardware, cutlery and flatware. Michael Gill fonds

Fonds consists of an autograph letter signed, Port of St. John's, Newfoundland, Oct. 30 1756, by Michael Gill, Commissary, certifying that George Nixon, master of the sloop Diligence, who landed a cargo of lumber from Piscatataqua, could not proceed from the harbour with his vessel as it was condemned. The cargo included a large lumber shipment of oak planks and maple boards, quite likely for shipbuilding for action in the French and Indian war.
