Fonds consists of records of the purchase of land and fishing rights in Newfoundland from Joan Burrows, Joan Churchward, and John Aylward; power of attorney from Christopher Arthur (1730); affidavits of John Summers and Arthur French, regarding the detention of the ship Happy Return (1742),and of John Gale, Peter Cutler and Alexander Findlator, regarding the seizure of The Hampshire (1745); and a letter from Charles Walley, St. John's (1773).

The record include: bills of sale; lease agreements, employment agreements; bills of lading for the sailing vessel Providence; a ledger-sheet; a list of disbursement for the schooner Mary; business contracts; an insurance policy; a character reference; correspondence; survey of road conditions between St. John's and Bay Bulls (1835); specifications for Court house, Placentia (1834); last will and testament of Owen Mercer (1751); and a letterbook.

William Vallance Whiteway fonds

The fonds consists of a limited number of legal and political papers. It includes one indenture, dated 8 August 1888, for the property known as "Darby O'Hollohan's Plantation." The fonds also includes one confidential letter to William V. Whiteway from Robert Bond, dated 23 June 1891, which examined the prospects of the Confederation between Newfoundland and Canada.

The fonds include land deeds and mortgage indentures for property in St. John's (1825, 1836, 1873, 1896, 1904, 1915); financial records (1906, 1907); cash account book of the O'Mara business (1915-1917); a day book of the O'Mara business and household expenses (1916-1926); cheque books of Peter O'Mara (1921-23, 1906-14); correspondence (1934, 1926); and 3 unidentified photographs.

Forward family fonds

The fonds contains deeds, conveyances and other legal documents, 1750-1866, Captains' logbooks, 1842-72 (Samuel, 1842, William the Fourth, 1852, Britain, 1853, Harriet Ridley, 1863-65, Six Brothers, 1872), and a Furness Line sailing schedule, 1928.

The legal documents provide evidence of the acquisition, transfer and subsequent loss of the family's property in Carbonear from 1834 to the 1860s. They also provide evidence of the business activities and associations of the firm of George Forward. The Captains' logbooks detail the voyages of five of the Forward's fleet of foreign-going vessels.

The records are arranged in three series: 1. Legal documents; 2. Logbooks; 3. Other material.
