Haystack photograph collection

The collection contains 204 copies of original photographs gathered by the Haystack Reunion Committee for inclusion in its commemorative booklet, Haystack Reflections, published in 1997. The images include schools, churches, business premises, work and social activities, special events, Haystack residents, and the changing landscape of the community in the first half of the 20th century. All have been identified and described on MHA photographic database. Families include Gregory, Drake, March, Coffin, Wakely, Gilbert, Wareham, Allen, Halfyard, Paul, Bendle, Best, Johnson, Jarvis, Tulk, Bert, Peach, Quinton, Pike, Reid, Bugden.

Keith Matthews fonds

Fonds consists of records collected by Matthews for his dissertation and during his tenure as chair of the Maritime History Group, as well as his prior research. The fonds includes material for his research into the study of the Newfoundland/West of England fisheries, the subject of his doctoral thesis, as well as extensive data on the individuals and businesses involved in the early settlement and trade of Newfoundland, up to 1850.

The early modern documents are a collection of copies of over 1200 documents held at repositories in Britain relating to political development and trade in Newfoundland in the 17th and 18th centuries. The 19th and 20th century Newfoundland documents are copies of individual documents and collections of documents relating to the Newfoundland fishery and its government and politics, drawn mostly from records of the Colonial Office, Newfoundland governors papers and papers of Newfoundland prime ministers. The fonds also includes Matthew's research notes and personal papers.

The fonds is arranged in five series: Series 1. Early Modern Documents, 1500-1800; Series 2. Name Files, 1500-1850; Series 3. 19th and 20th Century Documents; Series 4. Research Notes; Series 5. Personal papers.

Fonds consists of microfilmed copies of ships' papers, including fishing and shipping papers, 1761-1790. They record trading activities with local merchants in Virginia and Maryland; unofficial cargo manifests; journal of a voyage on the sloop Phoenix; and work performed aboard the sloop Robinwood. Business and family papers contain correspondence, legal records, and financial papers relating to shipping and business affairs and include merchant correspondence, bonds and deeds, shipping accounts, and correspondence with family members.

Fonds is arranged in three series: Ships' papers (1761-1790); Shipping account books (1763-1788); Business and family papers (1758-1817).

Fonds consists of baptismal certificate, graduation certificates, letters of appointment, pastorals (1870-1893); diaries (1870-1886); family scrapbook, photograph albums, testimonials from Holy Cross College professors; correspondence, including letters about Orange Society disturbances (1878) and his relationship with the Benevolent Irish Society (BIS); and a copy of his last will and testament. Fonds also includes newspaper clippings and printed material related to his life.

The fonds consists of the personal papers and photographs of the Rennie family of St. John's, including sketches by Marjorie Rennie (1906), and by R. M. Rennie (1921 and undated); bank statements (1923-31, 1938); correspondence (1931,1936, 1937); Christmas cards (from Prime Minister of Newfoundland-1928, and Royal Canadian Legion-1984); poetry; song lyrics (1866); railway voucher for W. Picco for Royal Canadian Navy (1916). The fonds also includes newspaper clippings.

The fonds consists of records relating to the Rennie businesses including, client list (1982, 1984), R.M. Rennie professional appointment, correspondence with Agriculture Canada (1977), correspondence relating to property ownership (1892, 1893, 1896, 1963), record of labour book (1896-1897), documents relating to the Rennie Baking Company (1902, 1907), undated records of supplies for Rennie's Mill, sales and receipt books (1899-1900, 1956-1981), property maps of Whitbourne property for the National Defence (1742); Corner Brook Bowater's pulp and paper mill (1945); and lot of land leased to U.S.A (1942). The fonds also includes newspaper clippings relating to the Rennie businesses.

Rev. George M. Johnson fonds

The fonds consists of 15 diaries in the form of numbered booklets of around 30 - 32 pages each, handwritten, with the inclusive dates recorded on the front cover. The collection starts with Diary 13, March 11 to May 8, 1855, moves to Diaries 33 - 35, November 6, 1858 to June 20, 1859, and finally Diaries 45 - 55, December 18, 1860 to December 31, 1862. The location of the missing diaries, which presumably started with his incumbency at Portugal Cove and included a trip to Labrador and the death of his first wife in 1860, is unknown.

The diaries record the weather, the texts on which all his sermons were preached, the size of the congregations, number of communicants, amount of offetory and other collections, names of the sick and other parishioners visited, baptisms, churching of women, burials and occasional weddings. His duties took him on many journeys, walking, on horse back, by cart and by catamaran, to visit his various parishes, as well as on visits to his brother R. Malcolm Johnson, friends, fellow clergymen, church services, meetings and the Colonial Building. Personal activities, such as tending his horse and garden, reading, writing sermons and letters, listening to his children's lessons, picnicking and boating, are also listed. There is very little reflection on the politics or worldly news of the day.
