Lawrence R. Smith fonds

Fonds consists of two series pertaining to two linguistic research projects undertaken by Smith during his tenure at Memorial University. The first series, Labrador Inuktitut dictionary project, comprises 162 original audio recordings made by Sam Metcalfe, Larry Smith, Fred Lyle, in various formats along with many copies and second copies; 114 cm of textual material consisting of notes, translations and transcripts of these recordings and related textual material pertaining to the Computerized Database of Labrador Inuktitut (CDLI); 22 issues of an Inuit publication entitled Kinatuinamot Illengajuk. The CDLI (1972-1981) consists of texts of Labrador Inuktitut from newspaper articles, life stories, tape transcripts, personal experience narratives and fictional narratives of speakers of all ages from Nain, Makkovik and Hopedale. The texts have been phonemicized and gramatically analyzed.

Series two, Sociolinguistic Survey of the Southern Avalon (SSSA), comprises 142 audio cassettes and textual materials, including brief biographies of informants. The SSSA was conducted by paid student interviewers in the communities of Branch, St. Bride's, Patrick's Cove, Cuslett, St. Vincent's, St. Shott's, Tors Cove, Colinet, Bay Bulls and Witless Bay in 1980-1982 and consisted of answers to a prepared questionnaire and casual conversation examples.

Bishop John Thomas Mullock fonds

Fonds includes documentation concerning Mullock's ecclesiastical appointments, correspondence as Bishop of Newfoundland (1850-68); lectures on Newfoundland (1860); circular and pastoral letters (1850-68); diaries and journals (1850-63); manuscript concerning the Catholic church in Newfoundland; financial accounts (1859-63); subscriptions by Newfoundland fishermen and sealers for the support of Catholic church (1859-64); a scrapbook compiled by Mullock (ca. 1860); and his will (1865). Fonds also includes printed material related to life and activities of Mullock added by Archdiocesan staff.

Fonds is arranged in the following series: 1. Correspondence and other material; 2. Diaries and journals; 3. Scrapbook.

The fonds consists of three volumes; Pew rent for Salmon Cove East, 1841-1883, and a transcript of a Vestry meeting held at All Saints, 1841 relating to cemetery, school and pews; a Parish Priests Register, 1892-1931, in which are listed alphabetically the members of the congregation, place of residence and, if married, the names of their wife and children; minutes of the Trinity East Parish Council and the Trinity-Trinity East Parish Council, 1969-1972; a proposed floor plan for St. Andrew's Church, c.1980.

First Trinity Girl Guide Company fonds

The fonds consists of a logbook of the company with an introduction by the Chaplain, Rev. R.S. Sheppard and a record book, 1953-1968. The logbook begins March 26, 1943 and contains a detailed account of the activities of the company. On p.2 there are 8 photographs of a camp held in 1944. The final meeting recorded in the logbook was held in February, 1966. The record book contains the names of the Guides enrolled and an account of their badges etc. Instructions and advice for guides, written by Commissioner Mrs. Sullivan, is included at the back of the book.

The fonds consists of a single scrapbook entitled "Historical photographs and Manuscripts of Trinity, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland by Rev. Edmund Hunt, 1888-1973". The scrapbook contains photographs and historical information about Trinity and the Rev. Edmund Hunt, compiled by Reverend Hunt's daughter, Florence Murrin. The book contains a number of early photographs of Trinity as well as photographs taken by Rev. Hunt that were made into a postcard series for Trinity. The majority of the photographs were taken by Rev. Hunt. The text was compiled by Murrin, borrowing extensively from a book on Trinity authored by her father.
