Trinity Police Station fonds

The fonds consists of three volumes entitled "Police Diaries", 1935-1950 and a book containing notes from a Training School of the Newfoundland Constabulary, kept by constable John P. Baggs, October 1944. The fonds is arranged in two series.

The records in this fonds originated in the offices of the court of the Northern District Court at Trinity. The material represents almost 200 years of the administration of justice in the district. Included with the original material is a series of early court proceedings, 1753-1774, copied from the original records held at the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador (PANL). The fonds includes records of the Trinity Magistrates' Office from 1830-1909; commissions and appointments of Justices of the Peace, 1849-1930; wills and land transfers, 1798-1924; appointment calendars for the magistrates office at Trinity, 1907-1931; Acts of Parliament and Orders in Council, 1833-1904; and voters' lists for 1836, 1865 and 1962. The records have been arranged in series following form and function.

The fonds consists of a limited number of legal and political papers. It includes one indenture, dated 8 August 1888, for the property known as "Darby O'Hollohan's Plantation." The fonds also includes one confidential letter to William V. Whiteway from Robert Bond, dated 23 June 1891, which examined the prospects of the Confederation between Newfoundland and Canada.

The fonds consists of the business records of the Saunders and Sweetman firm. The record include: bills of sale; lease agreements, employment agreements; bills of lading for the sailing vessel Providence; a ledger-sheet; a list of disbursement for the schooner Mary; business contracts; an insurance policy; a character reference; correspondence; survey of road conditions between St. John's and Bay Bulls (1835); specifications for Court house, Placentia (1834); last will and testament of Owen Mercer (1751); and a letterbook.

Fonds consists of consular dispatches acquired by the Maritime History Group to be used in the Atlantic Canada Shipping Project, a major research initiative, examining various aspects of the Atlantic Canadian maritime economy. Consular dispatches included details on American shipping and investment, as well as reports on distressed sailors and fishermen.

Fonds consists of dispatches from the United States consuls at St. John's, 1852-1906. The fonds also includes consular reports from selected Canadian ports: Prince Edward Island: Charlottetown (1857-1906); Nova Scotia: Halifax (1833-1906); Pictou (1837-1907), Windsor (1872-1906); Yarmouth (1886-1906); New Brunswick: Moncton (1855-1905); Saint John (1835-1906), St. Stephen (1882-1906); Quebec (1861-1906), Gaspe (1856-1906).

Fonds also includes consular dispatches from St. Pierre, 1850-1906.
