Biographical history

Kate Ellen Margarethe Hettasch (March 31,1905-January 16, 1987) was born in Hopdale, Labrador to Paul and Ellen Hettasch, both Moravian missionaries. She was educated in Europe and volunteered for mission service in 1923 during a youth rally. Upon graduation she chose to teach in Nain, Labrador where she was the only teacher in the community and was nicknamed ‘Labrador Kate’. She eventually moved to the United States where she died in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Scope and content

Collection consists of a poem written by Kate Hettasch about Christmas in Nain with a personal note on the reverse (1981); Christmas cards with Inukuluk designs by Kate Hettasch; picture and poem entitled " Blessed Christmas" by Kate Hettasch; correspondence from S.P. Hettasch to THEM DAYS concerning the death of Kate Hettasch; obituary for Kate Hettasch from The GLOBE TIMES, Bethlehem, Pa. (1987); poem by Kate Hettasch; eulogy for Kate Hettasch by Edwin W. Kortz (1987)
