In November 1999 the Parish of St. Mark the Evangelist was given approval by Vestry, the governing body, to set up an archive with a volunteer archivist and a committee of seven. On December 29, 2000 a Global Assessment was conducted and St. Mark the Evangelist Archive became a member of the Association of ANLA.

St. Mark’s Archive is dedicated to the acquisition and preservation of archival materials related to the history of the parish. Non-restricted materials are made available to the public.

At the 1987 meeting of the Anglican Diocese of Eastern NL, of which St. Mark’s Parish is a member, it was decreed that every parish should keep a proper record of all its activities including an organized record of vital statistics.

The principal Administrative body of the Anglican Church of Canada at the parish level is the vestry. The function of St. Mark’s Vestry is similar to that of a board of directors for parish business.

The Archive will accept historical material in any medium: administrative materials, minutes and reports of activities from parish committees and organizations; photographs and visual records; sound recordings and oral history tapes.

The Archive is an enclosed area measuring 4. 66 m x 2.35m. A separate switch controls the temperature. A ceiling fan circulates the air through louvered vents in one wall which also controls the humidity. The flooring is laminate. Materials are stored in archival Hollinger boxes on metal archival shelving measuring 183 cm x 47cm x 181 cm. The shelves are constructed 10cm off the floor and 30cm from the wall allowing space for another such unit as required within the archival area. A working or research room is located directly off the archive room.

Materials are organized into fifteen series, each divided into sub-series and files. These include: Vestry records, Organizations of the congregation, Committees of the congregation, Vital statistics, Personnel, Restricted files, Parish communications, Church property, Parish history, Parish directories, still and moving images, Financial records, Vestry books, Church offices, and an archive file.

The archive is available from 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday by appointment only.

1. The archivist reserves the right to restrict access to some material due to its fragile nature or if requested by the creator or donor, or deemed by the archivist as sensitive material.
2. The researcher must produce a written copy of copyright clearance if they propose to publish any researched material.
3. Materials from the archive may be lent to other institutions or organizations only when written authorization is obtained from the Rector and the archivist, and a specific receipt is obtained from the borrower at the time the material is made available. The receipt shall stipulate that the material shall be safeguarded in an acceptable manner and will not be used in any manner detrimental to parish members, or illegally.

The building and the archive area is wheelchair accessible. There is ample parking during archival hours.

English is the operative language. Research is conducted under supervision of the archivist. A reading room is located adjacent to the archive.

Photocopying is provided through the Church office.
