History
Arthur Holdsworth (1668-1726), fishing captain, ship owner, and merchant, was born in Dartmouth, Devonshire, England, son of Arthur Holdsworth (1624-1690). Holdsworth died in 1726 while mayor of Dartmouth.
Holdsworth was involved in the Newfoundland trade and became admiral of the harbour of St. John's in 1700, a position which he held periodically for ten years. During his tenure, however, he did not preside over any courts or meetings. In 1711, he stopped sailing to Newfoundland and managed his firm from Dartmouth.
