Fonds consists of family history material collected and used by Gert Crosbie while working on the history of her husband's family, the Manuel family of Exploits and Burnt Island, Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland. The fonds includes originals of Gert's student papers on the Exploits families. The fonds contains cemetery inscriptions, photographs, correspondence and a file containing information on the Crosbie family. Material previously donated by Crosbie (MF-007) has been refiled in this fonds.
Crosbie, GertFonds consists of photocopies of the incoming correspondence of the firm of George W. Hunter from many shipowners for whom he acted as agent, and from whom he chartered vessels. Much of his business was done with shipowners from Atlantic Canada. Weekly reports of freight markets from Saint John and Yarmouth are included. The correspondence has been arranged geographically and listed by individual correspondent.
Hunter, George W.Collection consists of photographs of various vessels in St. John's, harbour and elsewhere. Photographs include the following: the management and staff of Murray Agencies [1950s]; 2 photographs of the Department of Transport vessel Sea Beacon; the deck of the tug Glenmore, Furness Withy; the Signa tied up at Murray's wharf; 11 photographs of the voyage of the Hudson Bay Company vessel Fort James; the sinking of the Signa (1959); the Gazella; the Anglo Newfoundland Development (AND) paper company shed; the SS Stephano; and 6 photographs of the two-masted schooner James Burton Cook.
The collections also includes 21 charts of Newfoundland and the North Atlantic, including a 1907 map of Howley's geological survey of Newfoundand (top half only), as well as articles on the voyage of the Fort James and clippings concerning the Norma and Gladys from the periodical Sea Classics.
Snelgrove, GeorgeThe fonds consists of the business ledgers of George Forward for the period 1842-1858. These ledgers record customer accounts with George Forward at Carbonear. Partial indexes are included with some ledgers.
Forward, GeorgeFonds consists of microfilmed reproductions of three account books, 1658-72, which describe Captain Curwen's relationship with the several hundred fishermen who worked out of Salem and Marblehead in the mid-seventeenth century. These account books were selected from the Curwen papers held at the Essex Institute, Salem, Massachusetts.
Curwen, GeorgeFonds consists of Laws' working files, the majority of which came from Laws' office as manager of NAFEL. Other material relates to the various government agencies and committees with which he was associated. The bulk of the material covers the years from 1936 to 1981, when Laws was a central figure in Newfoundland's fishing industry.

Laws, Frederick A. J.The fonds contains deeds, conveyances and other legal documents, 1750-1866, Captains' logbooks, 1842-72 (Samuel, 1842, William the Fourth, 1852, Britain, 1853, Harriet Ridley, 1863-65, Six Brothers, 1872), and a Furness Line sailing schedule, 1928.
The legal documents provide evidence of the acquisition, transfer and subsequent loss of the family's property in Carbonear from 1834 to the 1860s. They also provide evidence of the business activities and associations of the firm of George Forward. The Captains' logbooks detail the voyages of five of the Forward's fleet of foreign-going vessels.

Forward (family)The fonds consists of four account books from the Fishermen's Union store at Greenspond. It includes a daybook containing accounts with the Fishermen's Union Trading Co. Ltd. (1914); men's accounts (1916); and general ledgers (1918 and 1921). The accounts list individuals from Greenspond and nearby communities who traded at the "Union Store".

The original papers were donated to the Massachusetts Historical Society by Ezekiel Price in 1792. Subjects include the following: The main beam of the wrecked bark Vicar of Bray, built at Whitehaven (1841) with tonnage (285) carved as required by law, resting at Goose Green, Falkland Islands; the wreck of the Garland; the wreck of the Protector, with a condition report (1994); the wreck of the Craigie Lee, (ON 50251), wrecked 26 Dec.1879; a vessel struck a reef off Bull Point, East Falkland on a voyage to the UK with a load of guano; and the vessel Beechbank.
