    History

    Kate Ellen Margarethe Hettasch (March 31,1905-January 16, 1987) was born in Hopdale, Labrador to Paul and Ellen Hettasch, both Moravian missionaries. She was educated in Europe and volunteered for mission service in 1923 during a youth rally. Upon graduation she chose to teach in Nain, Labrador where she was the only teacher in the community and was nicknamed ‘Labrador Kate’. She taught at schools in Makkovik, Hebron and Nain for most of the years between 1925 and her retirement in 1973. Hettasch also ran the Moravian Mission stations in Nain (1934-1947) and Makkovik (1958-1963). She eventually moved to the United States where she died in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in 1987.
