Biografie
Basil Fearn (1913-1992), businessman and shipbuilder, was born in 1913 at Harbour Buffett, Placentia Bay, son of Alice (Tulk) and Percy Fearn . He married Alice Moores, Wesleyville. They had four daughters: Janet, Judy, Susan and Cathy. Fearn died in 1992.
When Fearn was four years old, his family relocated to St. John's, where his father opened a furniture business. Fearn was educated at Memorial University College. When he left university he managed his father's business in St. John's. In the late 1940s he established Basil Fearn Limited, a marine engine and equipment business, in St. John's.
In 1947, in cooperation with fish merchant Spenser Lake, Fearn purchased the Clarenville Shipyard. The shipyard built a wide variety of vessels, including schooners, longliners, yachts and trap boats.
Geschiedenis beheer
Photographs remained in the custody of the Fearn family until they were donated by Mildred Fearn to the Maritime History Archive in 1997.
Bereik en inhoud
Fonds consists of 235 black and white photographs and negatives, mainly of vessels constructed at the Clarenville Shipyard during the period that Basil Fearn was manager of the yard, commencing in 1947. The majority of the photographs are identified. At least 50 percent of the images show vessels under construction at the yard. Some of the images were printed from negatives in 1997.
Vessels include the Matthew, the Terra Nova, the Newfoundland, the Marilyn Marie, the Richard, the Northern Wave, the George Kentner, the Philip E. Lake, the Penny Luck, the Shirley Blanche, the Algerine, the Hermitage, the Random Sound, the East Wind and the Right Wind, built for Job Brothers.
