Biographical history

Frank Saunders (1935-1987) was born in Davis Inlet, Labrador, to Gilbert and Eliza (Broomfield) Saunders. At the age of eight, Frank moved with his parents and siblings to what is now Happy Valley, Labrador. He was educated at public schools in Happy Valley and North West River, Labrador. Frank began his working career with the Hudson’s Bay Company and was later employed at Canadian Forces Base Goose Bay, as well as being self employed as owner/operator of Saunders’ Restaurant. Frank also later worked with the municipality of Happy Valley-Goose Bay for 24 years as a heavy equipment operator and superintendent of Municipal Works and Services until 1987. He resided in Happy Valley-Goose Bay with his wife, Doris (Martin), and raised 3 children. Frank Saunders received a commendation for community service from her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1977.

Collection consists of the following: A Victory Bond certificate belonging to Charles Decker, Fifth Victory Loan, October/November 1943, 1 page original; receipt from Labrador Craft Exhibition, Feb. 13, 1985; Annual Meteorological Summary: Goose Bay, Labrador, 1973, 1977, 1979; 2 X-ray film reference cards belonging to Mrs. Eliza Saunders, from the Newfoundland Tuberculosis Association; minutes from “Meeting of Lake Melville Seal Hunters,” Happy Valley, May 5, 1977; minutes from “Meeting of the Lake Melville Seal Hunters held in the Labrador Resources Advisory Council,” April 28, 1978; letter to Mike Parsons (May 10, 1978) from Bill Flowers (LRAC) concerning seal hunting; description of changes made to the “Seal Protection Regulations of the Fisheries Act”; “Recommendation for Amendment to Seal Regulation as they apply to the area of Lake Melville, west of Charley’s Point and Frenchman’s Point,” presented by Labrador Resources Advisory Council; 2 payroll change slips belonging to Gilbert Saunders, dated April 11 and April 25; memorandum to Gilbert Saunders from H. Asboe, Sept. 1, 1920; a letter to Mrs. Saunders from Walter Perrett, Jan. 26, 1926; extract from Moravian Records (marriage of Eliza Ann Broomfield to Gilbert Saunders); genealogy records of some members of the Broomfield, Carrie and Dicker families; and a license to operate a receiving equipment (Gilbert Saunders), 1943.
