Administrative history
Red Bay Co-operative Society was formed 1896 with the encouragement of Dr. Wilfred Grenfell as the first co-op store in Labrador. People purchased shares to generate the financial means to create a co-operative that would export fish from the area and import of supplies for the fishermen. Any profit was divided among the shareholders or used towards the betterment of the Co-operative. The Co-operative was run by its shareholders and was financially successful for many years. It was still in operation in 1941, although it no longer operated as a co-op.
