Biographical history

James Murphy (ca. 1803-1870), Catholic priest, was born in Ireland circa 1803. He studied for the priesthood at Waterford College Seminary, Ireland, and came to the Vicariate of Newfoundland at the invitation of Bishop Michael Anthony Fleming. He was ordained a priest at St. John's by Bishop Fleming in 1836.

Following his ordination, Rev. Murphy worked in the ecclesiastical district of Fermeuse (1836-58). Later, he was appointed the parish priest of Holy Trinity Parish, Ferryland, where he served from 1862 to 1870. In addition to his pastoral duties, he was also the first chairman for the Roman Catholic School Board, Ferryland District, and continued in that position until his death.

Rev. Murphy died 18 March 1870 while preparing to celebrate mass in the church at Cape Broyle.
