Biographical history

David O'Donnell (1840-1871), Catholic priest, was born in Cahir, County Tipperary, Ireland, in 1840, the son of Thomas and Mary O'Donnell. He studied theology in preparation for the priesthood at St. Patrick's College, Carlow, Ireland (1861-64). He was ordained a priest in the chapel of the college in 1864.

Rev. O'Donnell came to the Diocese of Newfoundland at the invitation of Bishop John Thomas Mullock. He died unexpectedly at Witless Bay on 25 April 1871. He was buried in Belvedere Cemetery, St. John's.

Rev. O'Donnell's brothers, Jeremiah, Patrick, and Richard also served as Catholic priests in Newfoundland; his first cousin Thomas O'Donnell served as a priest in the Diocese of Dubuque, Iowa.
