History
The Winterton Boat Building and Community Museum began in 1997 under the direction of the Winterton Heritage Advisory Board. They decided to focus on the Winterton boat building story as the main theme, with an emphasis on preserving the associated skills involved. Boat building skills enabled our forefathers to survive in a harsh marine environment and helped establish the cultural landscape we have today.
The Board realized that boat building skills and the knowledge associated with them were rapidly disappearing not only in Winterton but throughout the province. With this in mind, they initiated efforts to take on provincially the responsibility of what was done locally for Winterton; hence, the establishment of the Wooden Boat Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador.
