Fonds consists of the operational records of the business of S.O. Steele & Sons Ltd., for 1901 to 1983, with a complete record of the business existing for the 1920s to 1976. The fonds consists of financial records, ledgers, journals, order books and shop books etc., correspondence, orders and shipping information, including bills of lading, customs entry forms and marine insurances. There is a large collection of catalogues of products which were sold at the store: china and glassware of all qualities, silverware, lamps and hardware, cutlery and flatware. This fonds contains some of the corporate records of SEAL, 1942-1947. The records include correspondence files, 1946-1947 containing correspondence between the organization and it's members, local telegrams and information memorandum to members and executives. Collection consists of research data for Patricia Thornton's doctoral thesis, entitled "Dynamic Equilibrium: Settlement, Population and Ecology in the Strait of Belle Isle, Newfoundland, 1840-1940", (University of Aberdeen, 1979).

Collection includes 13 boxes of index cards, recording information on residents of 48 communities on each shore of the Strait of Belle Isle from 1848 until 1949. Boxes 1 and 3-11 contains the cards recording birth, marriage and deaths, arranged in alphabetical order. Boxes 2 and 13 contain marriage recall cards, which allow linkage between family groups, and additional data sheets.

Fonds contains 6 individual diaries containing daily entries made by the telegraph operator at Little Harbour, La Poile Bay. The entries relate to the movement of vessels in the area, weather, fishing and sealing, community events and recreational pursuits. From 1885-1921 the diaries were kept by Robert J. Henderson and from 1938-1948, by George Henderson.

Collection consists of microfilm of account books for Davis's three offshore schooners and the flakeyard. The books also record the towns in which his customers and hands lived. There are notations for every voyage and the quantity of cod caught by each fishermen.

Fonds consists of a photocopy of a ledger (1853-1858) which contains accounts of individuals who dealt with Thomas Oates & Son. The ledger also includes a list of the crew of the brigantine Belle for the year 1853, under Thomas Oates Sr., master; sealing agreements (1856, 1858); and some copies of legal documents and correspondence (1852).

Fonds consists of company accounts for the New England firm of Thomas Ruck & Company relating to the fish trade in Newfoundland, 1713-1722. Fonds is composed of five ledgers, a journal and a day book containing accounts for the seasonal trade (usually May-Sept) conducted by Ruck in Bay Bulls, Petty Harbour, Quidi Vidi, Torbay, St. John's, Ferryland, Witless Bay, Cape Broyle, Brigus Bay South and Conception Bay, Newfoundland.

Collection consists of microfilmed records which provide information on the fishermen who crewed Timothy Orne's vessels, local artisans who furnished provisions for the voyages and maintained the vessels, and his merchant acquaintances from whom he bought and sold fish and supplies. Accounts list the occupations of individuals.
