Neil Rosenberg fonds

Fonds consists of folkloric material collected by Neil Rosenberg as a result of his specific research interests and collaborations with other individuals. The majority of the material in the fonds deals with the folklore genres of song and music but also includes oral history, personal experience narratives, custom, language, legend, belief and popular culture. Some of Rosenberg's collaborators were Karolyn Stark (1969), Wilfred Wareham (1970, 1971), Herbert Halpert ( 1970), Frederick A. Aldrich (1977), Debora G. Kodish (1977), Peter Narvaez (1978-82), Ray Johnson (1981), the Atlantic Canada Institute (1981) and Tony Trischka [1991?].

The graphic material in the fonds consists of promotional photographs on two proof sheets, colour slides of commercial albums jackets, negatives that were created from photographs originally displayed in newspapers, photographs of Rosenberg's informants, and photographs of various groups that were either taken by Rosenberg or given to him.

The fonds also contains fieldwork notes, informants' biographical sheets, song sheets, songbooks, partial and/or full audio transcriptions and correspondence.

The fonds contains a large amount of published documents, photocopied material, newspaper clippings, promotional posters, commercial recordings, LP catalogues, dubs of radio shows and radio logs that were deposited due to a connection with the collector or informant and/or its folkloric content. These miscellaneous folklore items were collected by Rosenberg and his collaborators from 1979 to 1997.

The Maritime History Archive commenced the collection of English parish records during the period 1973-1980. The parish records document the genealogical origins of Newfoundland families whose ancestors had emigrated from England before the twentieth century.

Collection consists of microfilmed copies of records of many parishes in the south West of England, particularly in the counties of Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire. The collection focuses on those areas which supplied crews for the Newfoundland fishery and the places of origin of Newfoundland settlers. Devon parishes predominate. The collection is indexed by parish.

The fonds consists of the papers of William Gilbert Gosling and research notes and drafts of his book Humphrey Gilbert, correspondence, one photograph album, one postcard album and several loose photographs that belonged to Armine Nutting Gosling and Ambrose Gosling, typed speeches and talk about Bermuda read by A.G. Gosling over the radio (1957); Ambrose Gosling's photograph album (including photographs of central Balkans, WWI, 1914-17), photographs of Salonika and photographs documenting the aftermath of major fire; Ambrose Gosling's postcard album (featuring Salonika and other sites), cast photo of "The New Boy", featuring Armine Nutting Gosling; photograph Newfoundland Lawn Tennis Club.

The fonds contains the operating records of the Baine, Johnston & Co. branch at Battle Harbour, Labrador. The 36 bound volumes include ledgers, journals, a private ledger and miscellaneous account books. The ledgers are indexed and contain an account of all business conducted with each customer during the fishing season. The winter ledgers contain accounts of business conducted for each customer when the fishing season was closed. The private ledger contains confidential information relating to specific accounts. The journals list individual accounts and include the date, name of customer, purchases of goods or services, customer account number and total amount of the transactions. Miscellaneous account books, which were used in every day operations, contain various accounts as well as financial and fishery reports.

The fonds is arranged in three series: Ledgers, 1917-1943; Journals, 1931-1946; Miscellaneous, 1901-1953.

Musgrave Harbour Pastoral Charge fonds

Fonds consist of records pertaining to the Musgrave Harbour Pastoral Charge which includes Musgrave Harbour, Aspen Cove, Ladle Cove and Milford. These records relate to the activities of the Charge and its functional bodies, financial management of the pastoral charge and the pastoral charge vital statistics. The majority of the records are in the form of minutes, reports, financial records and vital statistics.

Thomas Davis collection

Collection consists of microfilm of account books for Davis's three offshore schooners and the flakeyard. The books also record the towns in which his customers and hands lived. There are notations for every voyage and the quantity of cod caught by each fishermen.
